I checked to see if anyone else has experienced this problem, and I didn't see any postings, so I thought I post the problem and solution. Didn't seem important enough to post in the FAQ section.
Every once in awhile I'll drag my ibook out and the the battery latch has popped and I've lost power. Today when this happened, I put it back in and started my ibook. All was well, except the touchpad would only move the cursor about 1 inch on the screen. I tried restarting a couple of times with no success.
I thought I was going to need to login to Darwin and fsck or something, but instead tried this, which worked (who knows why):
1. Shut down.
2. Take battery out completely, reseat, and lock.
3. Restart.
While this is no amazing bit of computer wizardry, my hope is that another forumite might be spared a minute or two of heart palpitations.
