Trouble connecting to wireless network

Here's what I've got setup. I have a wireless broadband modem/router that I'm trying to connect to via my Airport Extreme enabled Powerbook. The router has 128bit WEP enabled. For some reason, I can't seem to log on even though I put in the correct password.

Anyone able to offer assistance? Any more details required?

You need to set up your router by entering this web address in your powerbook's browser: http://192.168.1.1

Then set up any security options you want, and turn on the wireless broadcasting of the router. Make sure you are connected to it with an ethernet cable in order to start this set up process.

Usually if you named your router, use that name and the password "admin" to get in, unless you changed the password.

Viro, I am quite sure you tried most of self-evident steps.
Did you make sure the key is set to the correct mode: alphanumerical or hexadecimal? What about a MAC-filter?

I've tried entering the key as hexadecimal. It still seems to think that I'm giving it the wrong password. Perhaps I should try ASCII. But what would I enter when choosing ASCII?

@Natobasso: Done all those :)

Doesn't really matter what you enter for ASCII as long as it is the same on your mac and the router ;)
Since you didn'T comment the MAC-filter.. did you make sure it's off?

MAC filtering is off. This is just the vexing thing! I don't understand why it doesn't let me log on.

I'll just tell you some of the things that I have done. I have generated a key based on he passphrase google99 (of course, this will change so don't nobody try anything funny :)). I get the following key generated E4 3C 44 41 E9 CF F5 0D 85 98 8E 60 82

I've tried entering google99 as an WEP Password, google99 as an WEP 40/128 bit ASCII, and the key as a WEP 40/128 bit hex. It doesn't work. I'm thinking I'm putting the wrong thing in the password field here.

Help....

What utility are you using to generate the key? AirPort uses a different algorithm than everyone else.

What router are you using? Some of them have a built-in keygen.

@Natobasso: Tried it without any security (WEP or WPA). It works so I know that the router is working. I'm not that clueless :)

@GraphicUmp: I'm using the router's own key generator. It's a Belkin router, if it helps any.

What about this:
Use a 128bit WEP key on hexadecimals in this order: abcdefabcdefabcdefabcdefabcdefab
use the same key on macosx as a HEX code. Does that work?

I've done it as a hex code and it didn't work :( I'll try it when I get home, this time with lower case characters.

I've currently *just* enabled MAC filtering. So now I can connect using Airport, and in theory it should prevent others from connecting too. But I'd still like to get WEP working.

It doesn't make sense. Did you reset the router once? Which brand is it?
I would suggest to reset it and simply use that simple example for the hex 128bit key.
Since you have several books, how does it work with the other one? And how is the Authentification of the wireless lan organized? Open System or Shared key (maybe this is a d-link-only option)?

I finally got it working!!! At least, I know I wasn't losing my mind. Turns out I needed to do a firmware update. Once I've done it, everything works find and dandy now :)
