Trouble uploading files from OSX to Windows XP using filesharing

I am trying to send files to a windows computer using file sharing from a g5 (I'm not sure which version of OSX it is using). I can connect to the server just fine using apple - k and then browsing to the computer. The two computers are connected through one router and then a maze of switches. I can also view and open any files on the server, however when I try to upload files I get an error message. It says "A server you are using is unavailable" and then asks if I woudl like to continue trying to connect. The very strange thing is that even when this message, a small part of the file is being transferred. Over the course of a minute I can transfer a full 200kb file, but this is not practical for uploading 500mb files.

I have tried turning off the firewall and norton on the mac as well as deleting any keychains. Additionally I have connected manually using SMB, but I get the same results. I have made sure that the windows xp computer allows users to modify files in the shared directory. I do not have much experience with macs, do they have an ARP cache that I could clear? I am very confused because this worked perfectly last week. Do you all have any other suggestions? Thanks

Have you tried going to the menubar and selecting Go-->Connect to Server? Go there and then try putting in the IP of the server in the following format:

smb://x.x.x.x (x.x.x.x being the IP of the server)

If it works, you should get a window to authenticate to that server. Supply the necessary user and passwrod infromation and you should be able to access the share.

I have tried that, and I get the same result (able to connect, but upload speed is extremely slow and cuts out after 48-200kb). Does this point to a networking issue?

It could be a networking issue after looking at what you said about the "maze of switches". It's possible that you might be causing a broadcast storm due to a loop somewhere in the network scenario.

You are correct, I replaced the linksys 5 port switch near me with an 8 port we had laying around and everything works perfectly. Thank you for your help.
