trouble using Midi to USB in garageband. Won't pick up sound.

I have a Yamaha DD50 drum pad but I'm having trouble using the MIDI function with Garageband. It will not pick up the sound. My Midi to USB device is showing a constant red signal although I have tried multiple ways to get it to work. the midi to usb shows that it is installed on my computer but I can't figure out how to make it work..
