TV not compatible with MacBook?

Hey there,
So I have home videos on my MacBook that I want to view on my TV. I have two - one is Phillips, and the other is Sony (I would rather connect it to my Phillips TV though).

The method I've tried is:
--> putting the video on a USB, connecting it into the Side Port on my TV, and trying to play it (it doesn't show up, and I'm assuming it's because it is the wrong format of movie? I've tried researching what formats are accepted by Phillips and Sony, but it seems I have the right one, so I gave up on that method).
--> connecting the actual MacBook to the Computer using an HDMI cable - but that's slightly awkward because its only a very short cable and the TV is mounted on the wall.... (and I don't particularly want to hang my laptop from the TV!)

Is there any "nice" way of connecting my MacBook to the Phillips TV - and being able to hear and see the video on the TV screen, and not the Mac screen? If so, could you please point me in the direction of where to buy this solution?

Sorry for my tech illiteracy, and thanks for your patience!

I don't understand what you mean about using USB for the video. I would adapt your display port to HDMI and use a long enough HDMI cable to comfortable reach your TV. For audio, you can adapt it as well to the same HDMI cable. For example, Monoprice.com has an adapter for display+audio to HDMI. Which model MacBook do you have?

USB: putting the video on a USB and attaching the USB into the side port of the TV? But that didn't work, probably due to the format of the video not being compatible with the accepted formats that the TV reads.

Right, that's what I was expecting to hear - but does Apple make a longer cable? I was hoping to stay within Apple/Mac products (and to stick to only one product, hopefully) but I guess this may not be possible.

I guess I'm just wondering whether I'm going to need multiple non-Apple/Mac cables if I want to connect my Macbook to my TV (so that the audio and movie functions work, to watch videos full screen on my TV, and it doesn't necessarily need to be through HDMI)? Thanks for your help.

Apple is not in the cable business. If you prefer to stick with a high quality brand name, shop with Monster Cable, for example.
