Two HDD's??

Depends on the exact model. I do remember a Mac Addict article that gave the instructions for this. You could try going throught their archives.

You might be better off just getting an external firewire drive.

I have an imac strawberry (400 mhz), I'd prefer a second internal as firewire hdd's are a little expensive

Even if you could manage to make a second drive fit, there would be no IDE support for a second drive. You would need an IDE PCI Controller card, and you can't put one in an iMac.

Heres a tip. Go and buy a decent HDD, say, 60 or 80GB 7200rpm, put THAT into the imac in place of the one you have now, and then, buy a firewire case and put the original HDD in that. i think you can probably get an empty firewire enclosure for about $US50-$75

Firewire case? presumably you plug that into the firewire for and then plug the hdd into the case?

Yeah. There are all sorts of variations available. The one i have has 3 firewire (for daisy-chaining) ports and 1 usb. it also has RCA out which connect directly to the sound-out thing on the back of an optical drive. It uses a standard power cable, and almost compliments the tower/monitor too, colour-wise.

The original and also the 5 flavors line don't have Firewire. Not until the slot loading iMacs did they have Firewire.

Kool, I'll have a look for one cos I've got a firewire port on my G3 400 imac.

What is the speed like? presumably quite fast being firewire?

Yep. The best and easiest idea is to just buy an external firewire drive, or a plain ATA drive and a firewire case to put it in. FireWire is actually faster than the internal ATA bus on your iMac, 50 vs. 33 MB/sec. Be sure to get a 7200 rpm hard drive, preferably with 8 MB cache, and most important, a firewire case with oxford 911 chipset :)
