Unable to access using the Mac HD icon

Alright...here we go.

I have never ever ever seen this before and I pray someone out there has.


Have a user with G5 2 x 3 GHZ Dual Core Intel Zeon
8GB Ram
10.4.9

User was working one day he notices that if he tries to double click the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop or to even click it in the pane window, It opens lightning fast and disappears just as fast.

Can get into applications, desktop and everything else EXCEPT the HD icon.

Created a new profile and did not copy any thing over from his old profile and it worked for a week.

Now i am unable to create a working profile with out this isue.


PLEASE anybody have a clue as to my nemisis?
 
First, I _guess_ it's a Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Xeon, nothing G5 about it (well, the case looks the same more or less...).

Second: I'd definitely check that harddrive. Start up using the installation DVD and use Disk Utility from the menus. Select the harddrive and hit "repair" (no need for that old "check" button, because if errors are found, you'd hit "repair" anyway, which'd check all over again).
