"Unable to connect", can't access certain websites

I am having trouble accessing select websites (apple.com, usps.com, timewarnercable.com, vivalavinyl.org, amongst others). I tried with Safari, Firefox, Opera, IE, but to no avail. I used to be able to access these sites with no problem, and I am truely baffled as to why I can't get to them all of a sudden. Weird thing is that I have no problems accessing other sites. I don't really know where to start. Please help!

HERE'S THE ERROR MESSAGE I GET IN FIREFOX:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.apple.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

WHat kind of internet connection do you have? Do they provide your TCP/IP information automatically when you connect or is it manually configured? Please provide more information about your setup.

I have OSX and a Verizon DSL connection. It looks like the TCP/IP information connects automatically. Here's what my Network settings look like:

TCP/IP
-------
Configure IPv4: (Using PPP)

PPPoE
-------
Connect using PPPoE: (checked)

Ethernet
---------
Configure: (Automatically)
