Unable to delete ghost icon on Desktop

Anybody run into this? I have a ghost icon on my desktop. I have verified:

1) Get info does nothing on the file.
2) Can't move, rename or delete.
3) Can't open.

ls -la from terminal Desktop directory shows no file.

How do I get rid of the icon? It's like the file system does not know about it.

out of curiosity try temporarily switching to a different desktop background.
Come back and report what happened.
