unable to use duplex printing

have a new macbook 13" with intel processor running OSX and use HP deskjet 970CSE that allows for automatic duplex printing on multi-page documents. The duplex printing option is unavailable and is greyed out. I have tried to access the function with the standard OSX drivers and after downloading the HP drivers to no avail. I am looking at upgrading my printer to a EPSON WORKFORCE 600 to allow wireless printing throughout the house and wanted to see if you know if the duplex printing will work with that printer also? That printer also allows auto-duplex. Thanks,

If you take a look at the printer's options/settings in the Printing system preference pane, isn't there anything about duplex printing?

There is a discussion about HP - Duplex Printing over at Apple Discussions:

Topic : HP Duplexing Problems?

... OK, if you have an Ink based product with duplexing problems (Deskjet, Officejet, Photosmart, etc.) and would like test the new drivers to make sure your duplexing problem is fixed, please do the following for me, and post the results back here. And please only try this if you're comfortable doing the process described. The results will not be supported by HP, so if you're not sure just wait and well get you final (supported) installers over the coming weeks.

That being said, here goes:

Step 1 - Download one of the beta drivers posted in the thread here. For example, you can download the one for the Officejet Pro L7300 Series.

Step 2 - Mount the disc image you just downloaded

Step 3 - Control click on the "HP Installer" file and select "Show Package Contents".

Step 4 - Open up "Contents" then "Packages".

Step 4 - Double click the file "HP Inkjet Printer drivers-CUPS.mpkg" to run the print driver installer. Note for extra credit you could copy this file into the same location of the beta installer you have already downloaded and then run the combination of your old installer with the new printer drivers in it. Again, this is for extra credit only.

Step 5 - Print! Print something with the new drivers that uses the duplexer.

Step 6- Post your results here, including which printer you have. Success, failure, partial success, whatever happens, post the results here. And please mention if you deserve extra credit so I know if you just ran the driver installer, or ran the full installer.

Thanks for your help with this. And your help will help me get "final" Leopard installers to you as quickly as I can.

Just trying to help.

I also found this which may be helpful, even if the Printer isn't a HP and the Mac is a PC ;):

If you don't use the software to set up the printer on your PC most of the advanced options (like Print Duplex) will be greyed out. Knowing what I know, and working with PCs and Printers for a living, I configured it myself and was frustrated to see the Duplex option was greyed out. Another call to tech support. He changed my TCP/IP port to a Lexmark 9500 Series por and it all started working.
