update AppleWorks

I just extracted the AppleWorks image file from my jaguar DVD. Everything worked fine. Now I wanted to update to the current 6.2.9 version, but it seems the AppleWorks folder cannot be found. It is running just fine in the Application folder and has the version 6.2.4. A friend guessed it might have something to do with the fact, I have no classic installed. Any ideas?

Nah, you don't need Classic, but AW.app does need to reside in the same AW folder in which it was originally installed. Also, IIRC, the updater has to be in the same language as the original. So even US & Canadian doesn't work for International English. God only knows what language edition you might be using, Z-S! ;)

Yep; if the US updater doesn't work, try the International Updater.

This raises 2 issues.

1 Why handle the differences based on language (even on mere differences in English spelling) in such a crude way as to require different installations

2 Why label the installers so badly that it is near impossible to tell which one you have?

You have to read carefully before you click on the download. It is best to use Apple's download web site when you are using a different language other than English.

I know you have to check what Apple has labeled it on it's website, but it would certainly help if the file name said what it was, once it was DLed.

Seems a bleedin' obvious idea. Although not one that programers have a grasp on.

As a designer I am sick of "Logo.eps" and that old beauty from Adobe: "USA.sit" which was their PostScript printer driver.

  1. To reduce the size of the downloads to make them practical for those folks still using a dialup connection.
  2. Good question.
