Upgrade Pismo - 500 MHz G4 or 800 Mhz G3?

I'm trying to squeeze some life out of my Pismo, which can be painfully slow at times if I get too much stuff running in OS X. I plan to up the memory (currently 192MB) and possible the HD. But my real decision is in the processor. Powerlogix has both a G4 upgrade (500MHz with 1MB L2 cache) and a G3 upgrade (800 MHz with 512K L2). The G3 upgrade is actually more expensive by $100.

Since I really think AltiVec is underutilized I'm tempted to go for the 800 MHz G3, but would be interested in hearing any thoughts, and even better any personal experience.

Thanks.

If you're not for fancy graphics, or special calculus, the 800 MHz G3 will be faster. And memory must be higher than 256. 512 is a good number.

I've got a Pismo 400mhz as well. I just upgraded my ram to 512 from 192. I've already noticed a difference. Although I'm still considering the processor upgrade. I too would like to know the speed difference between a 500mhz g4 and an 800mhz g3. I would like to know the difference in basic OS X operations, iTunes operation, MS office operations, etc. I've heard iTunes and OS X are optimized for the G4, but I wonder if there would be a difference compared to an 800mhz g3.
