upgrading from Mac Os X 10.3.9

Is this on Mac OS X Server or client?

Either version will basically work the same:

1. Purchase a full version of Mac OS X 10.4 (if you don't have already one). The retail discs will never be gray (if purchasing second hand, sometimes the OEM install discs are sold separately. Those are always gray, and will work only on the same model of Mac it was originally shopped with.

2. Make a backup of everything you have in your existing installation.

3. Select install type.
To keep everything and do a simple and comfortable install, select Upgrade (default).
You can also select archive and install, or clean install (will wipe everything). I would personally go usually with this last option.
After any of the above, make sure files are imported over correctly.
