USB 2.0 External HDD reading problem

Hi,

I have a weird problem here. I recently bought a external USB 2.0 HDD box (which is said to work under Mac OS X btw) for a 160 GB Maxtor. It is powered through an external little power adapter not through USB.

I can plug it on my PowerBook G4 1,25 15". I totally re-partitionned it with one 40 GB HFS+ partition and one 120 GB FAT32 partition. I created partitions under win xp (no FS just empty partitions) and formatted them both under Mac OS X with the newfs_* commands as indicated in some macosxhints.com hints, no problem so far.

Now when I plug the external disk, it shows my FAT32 volume correctly, the HFS+ one doesn't show up but I read that was a "normal" behaviour (just have to "hdid" the partition to make it show up on the desktop).

Ok, fine, I have my partitions and I can copy things on them, I put about 48 GB of various data on the FAT32 partition and a few MB on the HFS+.
But I can't read anything from the FAT32 parition !! (I haven't tried from the HFS+ one yet).
Everytime I try to copy a file from the FAT32 partition to my PowerBook, the finder just freezes, other apps will continue to work though and the CPU load is not particularly high.
Just unplugging the external drive won't change anything but displaying the message that the device was not correctly unplugged. The finder is still frozen.

It did that to me with another drive once, USB too. I couldn't read from it either but I could copy data on it.

Also I tried on a PowerMac G4 dual 1,25 with only USB 1.1 on-board and it works just fine. It is slow but it works. It also work under win xp just fine.

Any idea about that ? Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Regards
