USB audio interfaces

Anyone know of any cheaper simple usb audio interfaces like the m-audio mobile pre http://m-audio.rjmg.com/index.cfm?pid=3371

Basically i want something not very expensive so i can record on my iBook because all it has is a built in mic.

What i need, RCA inputs so i can go from analog 4track to sound card and record on my harddrive instead of on tapes its just so much easier, S/PDIF in would be nice as well so i could go direct with my J-Station.

at some point i want to get a digital 4 or 8 track, but i dont have the money now i just need something cheap so i can take my iBook to band practice and record from the 4 track, or so i can just work on stuff on my own.

Have a look at macmusic.com, soundonsound.com or the like to find some reviews. Thomann (thomann.de) do a really cheap one that I couldn't find the last time I looked but my flatmate said it was about £60 I think, that was something like 2in 6out with S/PDIF. You should be able to find something.

That's the thing though, don't get a digital 8 track recorder! You already have one, your iBook! You'd be much better off spending the money on as good an interface as you can afford and Cubase or whatever (or GarageBand of course!). A digital recorder is a bit pointless (and not at all value for money) when you've already got a decent laptop.

Thanks, So far ive found this It has 2 RCA in and 2 out.

You are right about the 8 track thing. The reason i wanted one is so i could record 8 different tracks at the same time and be able to adjust them individualy, if i got a good soundcard with a lot of inputs i could do the same thing essentially.

Last summer when my band recorded our demo. The guy had it set up like this when we did drums, 12 channel mixer > digital 8track>USB to computer> Cubase. What sucked about this is that when the drums were recorded we ended up only with a left and a right channel for tracks on the computer. It would have been so much better to have all 12 channels seperate. Everything had to be pre mixed before we recorded it, and not only was that a pain in the ass, once it was done and recorded there wasnt much that we could do to adjust stuff. Still sounded pretty good though.

I already have a lot of audio software for my PC because my uncle works for Sonic Foundry, now Sony studios. So i pretty much got Acid, Vegas and sound forge as gifts from him for birthdays or what have you. But i really want to be able to record with my iBook, because its portable. The sound studio that comes with panther is actually pretty slick in my book, lots of good filters and such.

Now that i see the iMic that might be what i go for because its cheap and i can always get a RCA 1/8inch adaptor... actually i think have one ^.^;
