USB failure printing to Olympus P-11

I've only just hooked an Olympus P-11 dye-sub printer to my Dual 2GHz G5 tower and installed the Olympus drivers. Upon reboot, I'm able to add the P-11 to my printer list with no problem and it appears in the print dialogue when I need to select it.....say, in iPhoto. No problem. Click 'print.'

The P-11's icon pops up in the dock and I click it to see what's happening. It starts off with the message "opening connection" and moves on to "sending data" (usually...though not always). It tends to stick on this message for something like a minute with the progress bar animating before the printing fails with the message "The process 'USB' stopped unexpectedly with status 81."

Olympus tech support made a genuine effort but was unable to help me solve this problem so I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this and, if so, how you were able to fix it...if, in fact, it IS fixable. I'd really like to be able to print from the Mac instead of only from my camera so that I can do touchups and such on my photos and still get that nice dye-sub print :)
