usb hd not seen

Dear experts,
the tiger OS in my macbook doesn't seem to see an external USB hd (20 GB). It is strange: if I plug a USB pen in the same USB port, it immediately gives the icon of the new disk, and if I switch to WinXp in the same macbook, I can see the hd, so I don't think it's due to power. How can I see the disk, or how can I force the system to mount external usb disks?
Thanks

USB is a cable, plug, and port. You are having trouble with a specific brand and model hard drive. What is the brand and model of your problematic hard drive?

Even though it is seen by the other OS ...
Do you have a powered USB hub to try it with while using OS X?

In Finder > Preferences > Sidebar : are both Hard disks and Removable media ticket as "v"? If you see a "-" for either of those that could cause it.

Do you see it in System Profiler?
Or Disk Utility?

I don't have a power supply to power it, but I can answer to the other questions:

in Finder > Preferences > Sidebar all is active;

I see it in System Profiler: when I plug it, if I stop and restart System Profiler, under USB I can see "USB 2.0 Storage Device" and the detail is:

USB 2.0 Storage Device:

Version: 1.00
bus power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
ID product: 0x5642
Series number: 12345678901234567890
ID fornitore: 0x0402

I don't see it in Disk Utility. If I go through the shell to /Volumes, I can't see it. It looks like it is not mounted by the system. Is there maybe any Parallels setting preventing it?
Thanks

Hm.. Parallels could have added some kext files with the application install.
At least System Profiler sees it.
How is the drive formatted?
