USB2.0 DVD Writer Plugged but no Play

New to the Mac, could use some help. I just purchased a LiteON external USB2.0 drive for backup purposes on the PC, but also want to use it with my Mac Mini. Didn't even think twice about it, figured that "as usual" the Mac will just start recognizing it and off I go with Toast. However, something rather strange happens when I plugged it into USB port on the Mac Mini: A series of "unrecognized media" comes up, and the more I click "ignore" the more it comes back. Definitely not very Mac like error msg.

The only way I can get it to stop popping up that dialog is to click one of the button named "initiate" which brings up Disk Utility. Under Disk Utility, there is my HD, and then there are 80+ drives of various capacity, from 4.0GB to 7.5GB to 32GB, and so on, all says are USB/External. I assume these are "ghosts" of the DVD drive.

Toast won't recognize the drive, only giving me the Mini's internal CDRW as an option. Putting a movie into the external drive also doesn't do anything.

Is there something I can do to fix this problem? Are there just drives that Mac won't recognize? I'd thought a USB DVD writer is a pretty standard thing, and doesn't require drivers or all those stuff. Any help appreciated!

Thanks.
