Used Powerbook G4 - Kernel Panic

Just wondering if you had any insight to the Powerbook G4 and it's operating system mishaps...

I bought a used Mac Powerbook G4 running on OS X 10.4.11.

I cannot run disk utility or download any new programs; for instance, I was downloading AOL for Mac, as the program is just about done downloading I get this (see first error message on this page in the following link):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392

This 'gray screen' came up a dozen times last night. I cannot download any new programs, nor can I run the disk utility to check for errors- just as disk utility is about to complete, up pops the gray screen of doom- disk utility is what the Apple web site suggests- no go, I always get this kernel panic gray screen and have to restart the computer.

I don't have any OS X discs, but I am sure I could get some- maybe a reinstall of the OS X will do the trick...

What discs should I be after if I am currently running 10.4.11? I have been using a PC for a long time, and my Mac skills are rusty to say the least.

Do you have any suggestions? Just want to get the computer operating...

Thanks,

Cliff
