Using an iMac or an iBook as monitor for PPC 8500

Does anybody know of a way to use an iMac or an iBook as a monitor for a PPC 8500. I do not have a monitor for my 8500 (which I haven't used in a while) but I would like to use it now to install Yellow Dog Linux. The 8500 sits right next to my iMac and my iBook.

Thanks for your help.

Since you are installing linux, I assume you will be running the X11 programs that ship with YellowDog. The good news is that using an X11 client on the iMac/iBook will allow you to "tunnel" the display from the 8500 to the iMac/iBook. This is achieved over a network link by setting up the 8500 Linux machine to provide ssh access. There are some discussions about this on the forum already.

You will still need to plug in a monitor for the puposes of setting-up the 8500 and installing Linux, etc. Perhaps you can just borrow a monitor for this purpose, and return it once you're satsified that the Linux box will start the right services.

Thank you, symphonix.

As you have probably deducted already, I don't really know yet how I'm gonna set up. I'll start by following your suggestion and check the discussions about this on the forum.

When I finally go ahead with this project, I might ask for your help again.

Thank you!
