Using my old G4 as a file server

I am the law!
I just got my G5 (Finally...had to wait 10 weeks!). I have a dual 500mhz g4 with tons of drive space. I'd like to leave all of my music and photos, etc in my home directory on that machine yet access all of the files from my iaps on the G5.

anybody see any pitfals with this? I'm on a 100bt hub right now...but I may have to upgrade to a 1000bt hub to increase performance.

on a side note

i wish i could just use rendezvous for the music sharing. the reason I can't is because it won't let you update id3 tags and play counts dont update.

if the music sharing is "for personal use only" why didnt apple make it so you can edit your own files when streaming them??

It would probably be best to do a little config - because using the G4 as a network drive would rock and you should create a few partitions and set one up as a shared drive - with lax user permissions so everyone can help themselves to it. You will need to jump through quite a few hoops to access the stuff in your old home folder.
Restructure the drives on the old box - it will help you a lot.

That idea totally rocks. I myself have a fileserver that i store all my movies, applications backups and whatnot on it....it's got 4 120gb drives and i access it through my 100mbit network...i can stream divx movies from it without a problem, play mp3s....do whatever I want with no slowdowns. I'm sure it would suit your needs the best to make that a file server, but like Fah said....do some config, setup a few partitions...and shares to keep stuff organized...and keep your OS on a different partition completely...incase you have to reload the OS and keep your files safe.
