using the gui button for apache 2.0

So, I've got Apache 2.0 running on a 10.1 box, and I usually start it with a terminal, using apachectl. A mac expert (boss's husband) came along behind me, restarted the server, and used the GUI system control panel to try to start web sharing.
The box now hangs on startup when trying to start apache. Where is the apache daemon started from in OSX, so I can get in there and kill it? Appreciate any help.

that's where the apache startup script is kept

Thanks. Any ideas on how to get it into safe mode? Holding down shift right after restart doesn't seem to be working.

apparently shift only works with OSX 10.1.3 and later. I found a great resource for key sequences. For anyone else who's interested:
