This is a question regarding my sister's Macbook Pro5,5.
She recently started having various problems with it; we're not sure if they're hardware or software related at this point.
- A while ago the laptop refused to power on. For days pressing
the power button did nothing; the laptop was totally
unresponsive. Then, randomly it would seem, it did start up
when she pressed the power button - she's been afraid to turn
it off again since, in case it doesn't power up again, so we've
just been sleeping it instead.
- Since then, some of the programs and features of the laptop
have not been working right. Notably, iPhoto freezes when we
try to quit the program (it works fine until then).
- For a period of time the 'docs' program was frozen, during
this period of time (which was until I showed my sister how
to force quit it with command+option+esc), other programs,
such as iTunes, would not open when clicked on. After a
period of unresponsiveness, an error message would pop up
saying something to the effect that the program would not
run (which we obviously knew already).
- There is something wrong with the dock - the animation
feature upon starting a program does not work, even though
the programs do start up. Also, the little white dot that
typically shows below programs that are running is no longer
there, even when a program is in use. Additionally, when the
downloads list is viewed from the dock, it freezes in place for
a few minutes before it will minimize.
I've checked the console to look for issues. For some reason, the Log Database Queries isn't current: the most recent date is 08/24/10, and more and more from that date keep popping up. Under 'all messages', this keeps popping up:
'
over and over and over and over. seems weird.
also, 'system.log' seems to be printing this error a log:
I'm not sure if that's normal or not.
ok, that was a rather lengthy explanation.. but there you have it. thank you for helping!
