Vertical Maximize Only

Is there a way to maximize my windows vertically in OS X? I want a quick and easy way to see a full page, but don't want the window to take up the whole display by maximizing horizontally also.

thanks

Fortunately, in OS X, when you maximize a window, it only expands to show you what is in the window, not to take up the entire screen, so if it expands horizontally it is because there is information to the left or right that you are not seeing now. If there isn't, it will only expand up or down.

That may be true for some apps, but it doesn't always work as advertised. Mail, for instance, takes up the whole display even if I don't have any email showing. The maximize button on iTunes doesn't even maximize, they overloaded it to display the miniture controls (so I don't see anyway to do it unless I resize manually). In Quicken, the register doesn't work as you describe. I can go on and on. I need a way to explicitly say maximize vertically. While the smart maximize is a nice attempt, it doesn't always do what you want.
