Very strange OSX sleeping/awake issue

I'm not sure if this is something bad or not, but.. every so often, my iMac screen just awakes, I have my energy saving settings to only turn off monitor every 15 minutes.. but like, every couple hours, it comes back on.

is this something related to hardware issues or possibly someone trying to "tamper with my system"? every time it happens, I go to the screen and nothing is moving, nor is the CPU load any higher/lower than idle...

clearly the wind just doesn't move my mouse, or an invisible ghost pressing the keys, although that'd be quite odd and very weird.

Thanks

Hi Zynizen,
I experience a very similar behavior on an iMac Intel 24"; even when i put it to sleep manually, next morning it's on! The mouse is on, furthermore the hard disk cycles on one minute basis... My daughter experiences a similar trouble on her MacMini G4. Naturally we tune the power saving settings and sleep functions the right way.
I still don't have any solution for these issues, I wonder whether it is a system bug or any background task that fires our Macs on.
If anyone could give us a hint...

I have the same thing happening with my iMac G5. It doesn't bother me any, but I have a feeling that it might be something that's waking up the Mac, such as iTunes checking for updated podcasts or iPod updates or Software Update checking automatically for any available updates. But I have wondered what exactly is causing it to wake up.

I've gone to the length of watching my studio's 20" iMac while it sleeps (I was very curious as to what was waking it up). It woke up at seemingly random intervals with no connection to the applications open (there were none). I couldn't figure it out!

I have this also, and had me into sever concerns as to why.. In my case I tracked the issue to one of the following:

1. Setting in Preferences/Energy Saver/Schedule/Startup or wake. If these are set and the iMac is on, it will activate the screen of the iMac in sleep mode.

Similarly, my backup software that runs at night will wake the computer.

Also, my wifi printer seems to wake the computer.

Ok strangely enough, I double checked the firewall, and it was OFF. So, I turned it on, waited for it to boot up, and tried it again.

It hasn't done it since. I have everything set properly in the energy savings. I don't know why the firewall was off, but it was. Sometimes I thought someone was tapping into my system, but for whatever reason turning the firewall on, solved this issue for me.

best to double check yours, and see whether its on or not. Otherwise, I have no resolution. If at a later time it does this again, I think i will call apple tech support pending further investigation.

Thanks everyone. Hope this firewall issue helps you out., OR, if it is ON, try turning it off, then back on, and restart your mac. who knows, maybe it might help?
