vga - second monitor

Using a flat panel iMac G4 have connect a CRT monitor using a VGA Display Adapter. It works fine, however on the screens of the monitors the screens are repeated (meaning what is displayed on one screen is shown on the other screen), therefore no reason to have second monitor as no extra space. Is this all the Mini-VGA video output does - display the screen for output (used for projections and the like?) Can I set the screen with the right side being the right side of the imac and the left side being the left side of the CRT, therefore having a larger working screen? And how do I do this? Is there a setting or piece of software that can?
Cheers

Although it's not supported, like Ora said, Screen Spanning Doctor will make it happen. I've used the program for a long time without any serious problems. The only real issue I've had is having to readjust my screen size after rebooting, which really isn't a problem because I reboot about once every month or so.
