Viewing PC through on-screen window -- hardware solution?

Hi All,

I currently have a KVM switch that allows me to share my monitor and keyboard between my mac and pc. But I'd like to take things one step further:

Is there a solution that would allow me to show my PC screen in a corner (or in a window) of my mac monitor and possibly switch between which -- the mac or pc -- is dominant and which is in a corner?

I know that Timbuktu and VNC are software solutions, but I'm wondering if there's a hardware solution.

Thanks.

if you invent one im sure you'll be rich ;)

short answer... not that ive seen (i was looking a while back)

The only hardware solution I could think of is to put a video out on the PC, run it into a Firewire bridge, and then into the Mac. The major downside (aside from the ludicrous cost) is the slight delay inherent in DV bridges, meaning there would be a one-second delay on the display.
Software solutions you might consider are Microsoft's Remote Desktop Access ... though this provides an additional login mechanism rather than a way of just viewing the display.

Just seems to make more sense. One example of a real world circumstance: while booting up the PC, or setting the PC BIOS, I doubt a software solution like Timbuktu would be able to send images through the network, through my mac and into a window on the screen.

I know there are video cards with TV tuners that show the tv in a window. Perhaps there are video cards with video in that can accept the video out from another computer (or any video signal for that matter) and put it into a window in the mac environment.

Sounds to me that you need a PC equipped with a video card that has S-Video "out"; for the Mac you'd need a video card with S-Video "in". Use the QT-based player software for the card.

The only solution for the Mac side that I can think of off-hand is the ATI XclaimVR but the video-in requires OS9, IIRC. There must be others, however.

S-Video might not provide enough sharpness and res for your needs, however.

I use a KVM for my Mac and PC. It was a great (and cheap) investment!

Good luck!

Barry
