An alternative to Desktop Manager is Virtue (VersionTracker Link)
Virtue and Desktop Manager look and act very similarly, the Virtue author openly admits to using Desktop Manager as inspiration. But Virtue took the concept a bit further.
Virtue allows you to have custom wallpaper for each desktop. Alternatively you can watermark each desktop with another image, text, or a color. Other than this I found I preferred Virtue's way of handling preferences and configuration, but it is not a major issue with either.
Switching applications or windows between desktops could be handled better (<command><option>o brings up a dialog for the currently active window) but other than that I am very pleased with the app.
