Volume and partition icons disappear in Tiger

Hi all
Just upgraded, and several partitions not visible on desktop. Disk Utility sees them, and regards them as mounted, but they have a document icon, rather than a disk icon, as the visible ones do.
Curiously, if i click Unmount, they change icon to a Disk icon, but when I click Mount, they revert to document icon, and still not visible on desktop.

Disk Utility quite happy to verify them, but says they have no files or folders.

This is new to me. V. grateful for any hints. Regards Brian

Are these volumes on FW drives - and were they present at upgrade-time? (You should've disconnected them...) Are they Maxtor drives? Then you should search this Tiger forum for 'Maxtor'. You'll find some info.
If problems persist, try booting from the Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility from the Apple menu. See if you get the same results.
If they're external FW drives, try mounting them on a different Mac, if possible...

Btw.: New to me, too. So my advice is just "regular OS X troubleshooting" tips. If you can, make some statements about the hardware. Could help.
