WDS remote airport extreme really slow

Hi,

I've had a search for this and can't find anything.

I've got an O2 wireless 2 router and have got a airport extreme 801g router that I'd like to use as a remote connection in a WDS network.

I can get it into the network and working but the speed is so slow it's just useless.

I've got a G4 iBook running 10.4.1 which connects with it's wireless card with no problems and using the basestation as a wireless station is fine (I can get the a speed of 4 Megs a second) but using it as a remote station it's more like 15 KBPS.

Am I missing something obvious? I was expecting a drop in the signal but surely that's to much

Any help that you guys can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gareth

I was having a similar problem using two old AirPort base stations. If I connected through my computer wirelessly to the main base station I got great speed (18 Mbps), but through the bridge mu speeds were horrible (0.42 Mbps).

I finally happened upon an old mac tech support page that told me the following. Both the main base station and the bridge must have the same name, and both must be on the same channel.

My bridge was on channel 1 and my main base station on channel 3. The 0.42 Mbps was the speed they could manage on the interference between channel 1 and 3. The farther apart your channels are, the less interference there should be and the lower the speed.

After making the names and channels the same, my bridged connection was getting 8.4 Mbps. That isn't as fast as my computer gets on the same network, but defintely workable speeds. If you don't need to be able to connect to the bridge wirelessly, be sure to set it so that it won't accept wireless clients, that should help the speed too.

Good luck!
