WEP locked myself out?

Hey guys, I just got a new wireless linksys router.

I turned on 128 WEP with a passcode, but now when I try to access my network with my iBook, I get a "error occured when trying to access network" type error message.

Any idea what could be causing this? How do you "log into" a WEP enabled wireless network anyway? I thought I would just point at the network, and enter the passcode as the password, no?

Thanks for any help! I'm extremely new to this!

Did you restart your router?
If nothing works, use a ethernet connection to the router to adjust the settings and check them once more. You won't need any WEP code over ethernet.
Btw, did your network ever work with WEP or you just set it up and faced this problem?
And you should tell us which os you are using...

Just set it up and faced this problem. Running MacOS10.3.

Normally how is WEP supposed to work? You just point at the WLAN and enter the passphrase you set, correct?

I can plug in to get on the network and reset things, but for what security it gives me, I want to try out WEP as well.

most of the routers allow MAC-filter, which is quite good!
You might have probs with the WEP password because of the code. There is ASCII and HEX. Try both of them.
HEX will go from a-f 0-255. ASCII are regular signs..

You can just make a test:
set up a 128bit key for your WEP as hex like this:
abcdefabcdefabcdefabcdefab
(this is: 4x(abcdef)ab)
and use them same for your apple WEP using 128bit and Hex code.
Just a test...

This is weird.

My mac gives me the options to log into a WLAN with a password, 40bit, 128bit, or LEAP authenitcation.

The 40 or 128 bit are in ASCII or HEX, and I assume it is talking about WEP. But my router, only allows me to set 64 or 128 bit encryption.

What is up with 40?

I noticed the different between Hex and Ascii just now, still I couldnt get in tough. strange.

I set the mac filter for now.

Hey, if I do ifconfig -a in the terminal, how do I know which one is my Airmac card? I just put in ALLOW for all of the mac addys I saw there. Heh.

ifconfig won't help you much. Try System Preferences -> Network -> Airport + press config -> now you will see the mac adress.
Why don't you try the example I gave you up there?
Set the router on 128bit and use that key I gave you. Do the same on your ibook. This is just for testing. If it works, you can change the key.
