I have a friend doing a graphics course and they're using something called "3ds Max 7", by a company called Discreet (?), which only runs on PCs

Anyone heard of it and/or know of a product on the Mac which is equivalent or better?

YAP about two things in fact Lycander was right about two things :

1.renderman is just a rendering tool, nice but ....
2. replace SIMPLE by TRUE.

Maya is also expensive. Way more money than any normal avg person can afford.

6.5 Complete is $2000 USD, 6.5 Ultimate is $6000 USD.

Luckily, they have excellent student pricing, under $400 for 6.5 Complete with an academic discount.

And there is always Maya Personal Learning Edition, which parallels 6.5 Complete, but with watermarks on all rendered images and some file restrictions. It's free, so you can learn how to use it.

If you are smart and can handle/learn complicated software, there is always Blender 3D. Which is open source and free. It's also complicated and the interface IMHO is about as confusing as anything I have ever seen. http://www.blender3d.org

Other alternatives which may or may not suit your needs include Eovia's Carerra and Amapi. They are both around $300-600 USD each normal price, $140 USD student price.

Hope this helps or gives yu some leads.
