What causes random log outs in OSX

Fahrvergnuugen

I am the law!
This has happened to me several times and it happens to a friend of mine frequently. I am going to rebuild his system since it seems to be pretty fubard....

I've had it happen with 10.0 and 10.1. Everything will hang for a minute then all of a sudden you are at the login screen. You don't see any of the aps quit or anything...its really bizare...and disturbing.

Mine is a Dual 500Mhz G4 and his is a quicksilver 733.

Well, it could alway be that when you quit apps you also hold Shift down:D
If not, then it's the OSs fault and I'm out of ideas

yep, this has happened to me too ... luckily "only" twice so far, but it certainly is annoying ... no idea what does it though ...

What you're describing sounds like a crash of the windowserver. It happened to me a couple of times some months back, but I can't remember if I ever figured out why, or did anything to "cure" my machine. Sorry.
:o

The window server crashing thing is a good thought....though I tried killing the window server and it doesn't log me out. Everything just quits.

Even if I was that stupid, apple is not. It asks you if you are sure you want to log out.

It's probably loginwindow that's crashing; is there anything useful in /var/log/system.log when this happens?

Does the automatic logout happen on the same app (like everytime you open photoshop it does this bizaare thing) Just a suggestion.

actually, yesterday i unplugged my speakers from the sound-out port. i was dusting. as soon as i plugged it back it, i instantly went to the login-screen. Strange....

I'm thinking it might be RAM as testuser has indicated. We both have some cheap ram from memorytogo.com. In my case I have 256mb [my other 3 ram chips are crucial]. His G4 has 2 512mb chips from memory to go [and his has this problem more often].

From now on its crucial only!

Yes, it is bad RAM.... I had a crashing windowserver issue, and when i remoed the 512 that i had bought frm either Memorytogo or MemeoryX (not sure which) the problem went away. Damn cheap ram. It wasnt an issue under OS9... it seems athough X is very picky when it comes to memory.
