What do you think of Emulators?

This thread is similar to the "What do you think of Mac Warez" thread except it focuses on emulators and ROMs (Console games, not Virtual PC , etc.)

I find nothing wrong with emulators for older or discontinued systems like the SNES and Genesis. You can't buy these systems from the company anymore and so they aren't losing money. The only people being deprived of money are people trying to sell their used systems and that is not a big problem. I could see the problem with newer systems like the PSX or N64, but with the exception of virtual game station (which Sony now owns) none of them work even decently and are no substitute for the real thing.

Does anyone have any other opinions?

emulators are the best thing ever created :D
It allows me to have all my games in one place :)
so no more need for me to have a NES, SNES, GB or GG cluttering up my room, I put them up in the attic :p

It;s even nicer since I have emulators on my iPaq and I can take all my games with me!, if I had to carry my GB, GG with me it would be a pain (carrying A LOT of stuff, and eating up batteries like crazy, especially my GG!)

I've found an XBOX emulator, but don't plan on downloading it.

I only download emulators/roms that I own ( :) ). So when I go to visit my Dad I can play my N64 on the air plane, besides: isn't that why emulators were created? :)

A really nice Hewlett Packard HP48 emulator called "X48" does a very good job. There's a lot of free software for it. Awesome RPN calculator for geeks. To bad HP discontinued all handhelds. Carley Fiorina (CEO of HP) needs a serious beating.

I wish games entered the public domain after something like 17 years, kind of like patents. I wish it was like that for most intellectual property too. I can see some places where it wouldn't work, but wouldn't it just drive overall human progress? (with the exception of the games):D

I love MacMame, no need to dig out the old Atari. Also, if I can ever find ROMs, this n64 one for OS X looks promising. No need to dig that out then, too.. I wish I could find an OS X playstation 1 emulator, though. That's up in storage, too. :)

I would like an X Box emulator... just to screw M$ out of some money.

As long as you buy the games it will actually help Microsoft because they lose a $100+ on each X-Box

I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard for the Connectix people to make an X-Box emulator. It's just a PC with a special version of Windows CE/2000. The hardest part would probably be getting Video Acceleration to work, though... I really wish the VPC people would figure that out.
