What encoder to use in iTune?

Just wondering what encoder do you use in iTunes to import CDs and why?

I currently use Apple Lossless... it has the word "lossless" and disk space is cheap. ;)

Disk space ain't cheap on notebooks, I say. I go with 160 kbps AAC. The results are fine - and quite a bit smaller than Apple Lossless.

my 70gb library would end up around 300gb with Apple Lossless. not worth it. i currently use MP3 160k, although i alternate to AAC 160k every so often. sound quality is good enough for my audiophile tastes. albums that need higher quality get it (the 'floyd, Tool, radiohead, autechre, etc)

I rip cd's at 320 AAC, stereo, optimized for Velocity Engine

Hmmm - looks like i was in error thinking ripping a music cd at 320 AAC increased the sound quality - i will be re-ripping my cd's in apple lossless format as soon as i have the spare time.

Same here. Either 160kbps AAC or 192kbps mp3. Depends on whether I expect it to be played on either PCs or OS 9, where AAC support is lacking.

Apple Lossless is a great alternative to AIFF (also lossless), but it's still a bit big.

Depends on what I'm encoding, for whom.

Music CDs for myself: Apple Lossless
Music CDs for my tonedeaf mother: 128kbps MP3, 128kbps AAC, doesn't matter which, she didn't notice when she encoded with 64kbps AAC.
Talking people for my podcast: 32kbps (mono) AAC and 32kbps ABR MP3.
