What external hard disk can I use to get files from my old imac OS X 10.2

Hi I have an old imac OS X 10.2 and need to get important files from it. Its very unstable and Im worried I will loose the lot!?

I purchased a Western Digital external harddrive but when I connected to the mac it didnt recognise it?!

Im not very technical but understand it maybe because the WD hd is usb2 and the mac is too old to see it!?

Can someone recommend an older Hard drive or methode of recovering files?

There is no CD burner on the Mac and the Burner I had also crashes the Mac!?

I would appreciate some advice!?

There is a 99.9% chance the HD you purchased is formatted for MS Windows.
Plug it in, and call up disk utility, then repartition the drive for your Mac computer.
 
Hi Guys! Thanks for the advice! I dont think this imac has Firewire!? Regarding the repartitioning of the new harddrive I think this can be done but I have another question!? Can I partition the drive so I can also use part of the drive for PC use? If I split the harddrive into 2 or 3 partitions can these be altered or redone before adding the files? Im asking because on the Disk Utility it says "Saving the new volumes will erase all existing volumes. This can NOT be undone." Thanks CD
