What if...

What if Microsoft comes out with a Music Service like Apple, before Apple's Music Service comes to the Windows platform?

Then i think the death of Apple is near. :(

(not that this will happen, but... just imagine!)

I think apple have secured a contract deal with the record companies..... I hope. thus a windows version of iTunes could be apart of such a contract...

I don't even want to ask this question, but it just crops up in my mind every time I read your post, senne: Why the heck do you think that Apple (a computer and software maker which also sells iPods and now music...) would _die_ because of that? Worst case? Apple would have lost a business if someone else could grab a monopoly in the online music sales business. But the iPod was the best selling digital music player BEFORE the iTMS was released. And never forget that a company like Apple never dies. Someone would _buy_ it. Sure, that would mean change. But while it could mean change for the worse, it could also mean change for the better.

I don't see how a music service on Windows could do any real harm to Apple - let alone be "the Death of Apple". Apple are profitable not because of iTunes or the Music Store, but because the whole package appeals to so many markets: developers, professionals, designers, creative, and schools.

iTunes will IMO remain the music site of choice for Mac users if Apple is able to offer a broad enough selection of music. Although that would mean a relatively small revenue stream, it would'nt be insignificant.

On a more positive note, I think the iPod and Apple's DRM will drive the business. There is no other portable digital music player that offers what the iPod does. If M$ does come out with a service, they would have to allow the music to play on an iPod because of the iPod's popularity. I don't know what % of the mp3 player market that the iPod has but if it has something in the neighborhood of 25% or more then Apple has won the music wars. Of course Apple is going to have to lower their prices to remain competitive but the iPod brings in the SAME profit as an iMac according to the rumors that I've heard.

(The above is sort of jumbled, but I just poured my first cup of coffee, so am not quite awake yet!)

Quote from an article in the NY times concerning iTunes Music Store:
The store is limited to iTunes 4 users for now, and that requires Mac OS X 10.1.5 or higher and a G3/400MHz or better -- Strauss figures that this number totals about 1 percent of the nation's home computers, only a fraction of which have a broadband connection big enough to make downloading a comfortable process.

the music store has reached 3 millions sales!

so even if without iTunes music store on the pc . this is allready a success.

hahaha .. cummon i think u can do better than that... next time u post, put a little brains into it :)

I've heard of a similar service that a user pays 79 cents with a $10 a month subscription fee. I saw it on CNN and I don't remember where or who provides such a thing. It's by RealNetworks I think.

Yes but it's not $.79 a song, it's $.79 a CD burn and once you stop paying the $10/month you can't listen to your music anymore. With Apple's AAC songs you can make unlimited burns and there's no monthly fee to continue to listen to it in the future. Also you can't transfer the songs to an iPod either. Not exactly the same thing.

Also Listen.com uses MP3 format not AAC so you're not going to get the same audio quality either.

For Apple to effectively die off they would have to stop selling hardware, as it accounts for over 9/10 of their sales.

itunes is coming for windows by the next major update (4.1 or .2 or .3.... i herd it would be like 4.5)

This line I have heard many, many times since the mid 90s... and still... Apple has always defied the laws of economy, business, gravity, physics... and still stayed afloat...

it is not our favourite fruit company for nothing... even Forrest Gump invested in this fruit company... LOL...

Go Apple! M$... dun even try! Amazon is embarking on the journey to try to emulate the success of iTunes music store... as reported by CNet... I am keen and eager to see what these tards can come out with... seriously...

i doubt it could be the death of Apple but like MS has done to so many other companies in the past that have had grande ideas just to have MS copy them and then squash them, i think it could seriously impact Apple for the worse.

you have to figure Apple has a lot of money invested in this. far more than a failed computer design such as the Cube. it is like an entirely nother Apple devision like their retail stores.

also Apples stock has sored simply because of the iTunes music store, nothing else. if MS or anyone else pulls the rug out from underneath them, Apple stands to be in a serious world of hurt. death or not, it'll leave a mark and MS has proven time and time again it can do this to any company it so desires.

Apple started this incarnation of selling songs, and they will surely see it through to the end, especially once they bring it to Windows. At that point, even if other companies jump on the bandwagon, they will be a competitor for your dollar, and if their service is anything above decent they should stay above the crap. Inevitably, as some innovate, Apple and others will imitate, so we should see nothing but good come out of this, especially if companies battle to lower song prices.

If for some reason Apple sales started dropping drastically, I have no doubt they would eventually have to make their processors compatible with Windows code in order to sell machines. After all, the bulk of their sales is hardware, so that is upon what they subsist.
