What to do with dead batteries?

Okay, so I decided to buy a spare battery for my iBook, and life was grand. A few short months later, my laptop bag was stolen. Praise God that my laptop was not in it, however my spare battery was. So, I filed all the paper work with the proper people and by doing some dumpster diving, I recovered my laptop bag. While everything that was in it before was still currently in it, the bad news was that it had been raining that day and the bag was filled with yucky dumpster water.

Anyways, to make a long enough story short...my spare battery is dead. (*tear* "it was so young")

So, um...what do I do with it? I'm smart enough to know that I shouldn't simply throw it in the trash, but does anyone know where to recycle them? Does Apple give you anything special for recycling the battery with them, <dreaming> like a small discount on a new battery </dreaming> (if Apple recycles them at all)?

I know that here in Australia most mobile phone stores have a bin for disposing of lead-acid batteries properly.
