What type of hard drive ?

' Ello folks,....

This is my first post on this here fine site,..so greetings one and all :)

I'm going to fit a second hard drive into my G5 Quad, but, I wasn't sure whether I need an SATA or IDE type,...?

Also, I've fitted second hard drive in a PC before, and formatted / partitioned it myself, so I was wondering if it was the same procedure ,( more or less ) in a Mac ?

I believe that the G5 takes SATA drives, and any SATA drive should work. As for formatting and whatnot, you can do that through Disk Utility.
 
It's SATA. i have a similar machine. any SATA will work, 16mb cache is preferable, and get the fastest drive you can.

fitting it is as easy as pluging the cable in. there's no Master/Slave to worry about, no jumpers to set, it's just a cable.

I can go ahead and order the drive now,...

LT ,... When you mentioned about the fastest drive, were you referring
to disc speed ?
If so, would a 10,000 rpm drive run at that speed, or be governed down to just at 7,200 rpm in the Quad ?
( I read somewhere that this was the case in PCs ).
