What type of Video cards can you put in a Mac? example: Radeon 9700, Geforce4 Ti4600? Can I install any brand of these like maybe Leadtek, Hercules etc?

In other words What compatibility problems should I keep in mind when purchasing a Video Card.

What do you recommend??????

I DONT UNDERSTAND ARRR!

I'm afriad graphics cards for Macs are "technically" Mac specific. You can't "officially" just drop any AGP compatable video card in and expect it to work. In fact, most won't if they are not Mac versions of the card.
It is not exactly clear WHY this is the case, as, in theory, they 'should' have that same hardware on the card, though it may have to do with the ROM, and that the PC cards are expecting be be able to handle DirectX as well as OpenGL.

That said, there has been some success in flashing the ROM (the Read Only Memory) on NVidia PC cards (in a PC though) so they will work in a Mac, but often they do not work completely, and this voids the warrenty on the cards, and likely, the Macintosh you put them into, should anything go awry.

Such a shame the Mac versions of the cards are 1/3 to 2x the price of their PC versions...

Dam>>>Thats what I thought. There a very few Mac cards on the market.

I can get REALLY cheap PC cards but do I take the risk to save up to 40% $$

I was looking at installing a Radeon 9700 (PC version)
