.What?

Just got back from vacation in Door County… It was fun! :)

Anyway, I've been meaning to post this and as I haven't seen any threads about it, I'd give it a shot.

What's the deal with .NET and now, .Mac? I mean, first we have the weird computer lingo with the "i"s, and now we put a period in front of it. I'm thinking that the .com thing became the popular "dot com", and Microsoft and Apple want to piggy-back on the dot_____ whatever it is.

It confuses me, not because I might type in www.apple.mac (duh), but just because it doesn't make any sense! Tell me if I'm just talking about nothing…

Well, MS started this with .net --- This confused me, since it sounded like they suddenly had bought a whole TLD! Which, of course, they haven't. So all of my customers who reserved .net domains aren't in hell just yet. But isn't it strange to pick something as a name that stands for a TLD?

Well, even stranger Apple. But they're basically only making fun of MS, by saying: We can dot you if we want, look, here's .mac and its web services are working as we're talking.

So, that's it, really. Dumb names, one following the other. I think mac.net would have been better (instead of .mac). Then they'd have a) a domain name for it in the product name and ) a REASON for the name and c) better picking on MS possibilities.

And they could propose us to name our homepage like
chevy.mac.net :D

I mean for $100/year, we can have this type of exclusive thing, no ?
