Wasn't Apple delaying the release of QuickTime 6 indefinitely because of the MPEG-LA's refusal to remove content royalty fees from the licensing agreement? Anybody have any more info on this?
I think they may have worked out some sort of agreement. The final release of QT 6 Pro will require a completely new activation key. QT 5 Pro users will need to repurchase a key as well. On the FAQ page for QT 6, apple says
Because QuickTime 6 will include royalty-bearing technologies, a new QuickTime Pro key will be required to unlock pro functionality in the final release.
That sounds like we got our way. There was going to be 25 cents per encoder and 25 per decoder anyway, Apple was just holding out on the per hour rate. It will cost them a fair bundle just to give the non pro version out free, they didn't want us to be charged beyond that.
