What's with the F-Keys in X?

I just upgraded to OSX. I tried to set up the F-Keys to do various chores like opening applications and I can't find where to set it to do that. Or doesn't it? On OS9 I had had all 15 F-Keys opening 15 different applications and loved it.

So what do I have to do now, click in the dock? If so, that ssuucckkss.
 
There is no built in preference, but there are several shareware alterntives. look on versiontracker..
 
Maybe you could try with "Full Keyboard access" option in the Universal access prefpane. There should be a way to do what you describe without a third party app.
 
There isnt. Full keyboard access is stuff like working without a mouse, and using the keyboard to interact with the GUI etc
