I'm trying to compile elm and when I run Configure I dump out after getting the message

I can't seem to find your C library. I've looked in the following places:
/usr/lib /usr/ccs/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/lib/large /lib /usr/lib/386 /lib/386 /lib /lib/large /usr/lib/small /lib/small
...........
I'm a day-to-day Solaris user (at work), Mac at home, so I'm fairly comfortable with unix, but am not expert at building things.
Thanks for any help, and yes I know elm is old, and I know about pine and mutt, etc, but I *like* elm
Ok, and I did run the installer fro the developers CD, and did a rehash, but no dice (actually I think make only showed up then).
