I think the structure of the login panel changed with 10.1.3. In 10.1.2 I think there was a big tiff image for the panel, and now with 10.1.3 it has been replaced by a small logo as the only graphic, the rest of the panel being OSX GUI components.

If this is true then if you use a theme designed for 10.1.2 on a 10.1.3 system, it will replace the wrong files with more wrong files, and f**k your login up something proper...

This is why it's a bad idea to use themes on a system where themes aren't officially supported. Themes on OS X are hacks into the system to change things that Apple don't expect to be changed. When designing the system upgrades, Apple don't take into account what might happen if you're running a third party theme, and may accidentally produce an update that messes themed computers up.

This is why apple need to produce an official theme API like windows XP has, but until they do, I'm steering clear of themes altogether.

READ NEXT POST -- very important...

I ran into the same problem... freaked me out for a while... because I couldn't get back into OSX...

So I had to boot into OS9 from a CD.. and I replaced the orginal .tiff file that I had put in its place... ( I had made a backup of the orginal, so I just put it back...)

bighairydog is correct, they changed the login setup so you can't just change the .tiff for the whole panel... all the .tiff is the little blue apple... so you can't change the login panel as far as I know, just the login background...

/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Resources/loginpanel.tiff

This file needs to be the orginal one for the system..

incase you blew away the .tiff, it is a big blue apple that is 63x77 pixels at 72 dpi.. so make a new image that size and replace the file with OS 9
Hopefully that is the only file that Metamorph X changed...

I had just tried to replace the .tiff, and ran into the same issue...

But I put it back and that fixed my problem...

but it is possible that a lot of other files got axed, so you need check the files off your ORIGINAL OSX.1 CD and compare them to see which files you need to replace in this directory...

/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Resources

Boot up with os 9 and fix the files..
Just get the originals off of your OS X.1 CD... --

Hope that helps...

Dude, not good.. I just read this... It may be a good idea to contact them and see if they can help restore your files...

MetamorphX

http://homepage.mac.com/charonsoft/

Full support for MacOSX 10.1 (Tested on 5G48). Supports theme compatibility themes. When a theme is defined as a 10.0.4 theme, it is only available in the OS it is compatible in.

While MetamorphX itself has been tested on MacOSX 10.1 and works perfectly. Most themes available have not been updated to work with MacOSX 10.1. We, like you can not wait for their re-release.

If you download a theme and it does not appear in the themes window this indicates that it is not MacOSX 10.1 compliant and MetamorphX will not load it. We'd rather not see you hose your machine, loading an incompatible theme. Please check our Theme Server,Previews page for compatabilty. -- CharonSoft

'fraid that might not work - If the problem is indeed being caused by the theme you installed installing components meant for an earlier 10.1.x version, then replacing files from the 10.1.0 CD won't work. You'll have to find someone who has the 10.1.3 update on their computer and use that to replace your files.

Or, under OS9 (boot up with option held down and select OS9 from the menu), you could download the 10.1.3 update from apple's site, and take the files from the downloaded package.

bighairydog,

yea, you may be right... the idea is to get the original files to replace.. find a friend with OSX.1.3 for the files or a cd with what u need..

=)

I don't have friends that have a mac, all PC users.... But my grandpa has ordered a new iMac, but that's going to take a while when the iMac arrives.. But how big is the the resources folder (/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Resources )?
Is it so big? Can't anybody of yours mail it to me in a .sit file or something else? Would be great!

I have the LoginWindow Resources folder, compressed, in my iDisk public folder.

Can you open a .dmg file in os 9? Because the 10.1.3 update is a .dmg.bin file. You can open .bin in os 9, but also .dmg?
