Which Newton should I buy?

I'm looking to buy a Newton on E-bay...I know that the first few models are actual pieces of feces with the Apple logo affixed, but I can't find model #'s. The later ones are supposed to have great handwriting recognition, etc. Which model should I be looking for...does anyone have one to sell?

And, if you want to see Apple's first foray into computer design which made use of colored transluecent plastics, before the iMac ever came out, you might want to check out the "eMate 300" which also runs the Newton OS, but is a clamshell laptop computer type thing

What's a fair price? I'm looking on Ebay, and seeing the things go for $250....I can get a nice Palm or Visor for that much...I mean, they were discontinued in 98, they should be cheaper.

$250? That must be an unopened box and lots of new accessories. I got a 2100 in great condition for $90. When I get the time, I'll install a http server on it and use it as a html server, just for fun :p

Yeah, I wouldn't really put in any bids over $100, unless you really really want it and it's in fantastic condition.

Also watch out for people who sell Newtons with third party modifications like colored backlights or overclocked chips. They tend to charge much much more than the mods are worth.

I've never used an eMate, but I've always wanted one. Keep in mind, however, that they're not as powerful as the 2X00s.

An HTML server? I know you can do a bunch of crap on a newton, nbut what are the advantages over getting a Palm? (At this point, I'm getting it over a Zire mainly because it a piece of "Apple History")

Palm OS feels like a PDA. Newton OS feels more like a portable computer of sorts.

I really don't understand the design behind modern PDAs. Why are there hardware buttons for accessing apps when that area could be used for additional screenspace? Why can you only input one character at a time, and why only in that one little square?

I like the Newton because it doesn't suffer from either of these problems. It's a slab with a screen on it, and everything is available from the screen.
