Why does TiBook shut down all the sudden?

bkaron

Yep, That's Me!
Some of you may remember (when I was BIGDOGquake3) that I had an iBook 500. I used it all last year in school and for the most part I never shut it down, I just closed it. The book lost varrrrryyyy litttle battery power when closed. Even when it ran out of battery power it still went to sleep. I keept it on for weeks at a time :p

A few months ago I got an TiBook :D (See bottom for specs) and I use this computer the same way I used the iBook. all went fine up untill about 2 weeks ago when I closed it for about a day it would shut down and I had about 30% battery life left  I thought to myself "Why is it off, well I guess I might have shut it down  ". A cupple of days latter it did the same thing ::sleepy:: It looks to me that the TiBook is losing a lot of battery life when its closed, and yes it is asleep. Why do you think its doing this

PS: Is it normal for the TiBook to get REALLY HOT

30% after one day sleep-mode? Uffff, pretty much.
Does the battery get till 0% when you are working with it? I had a problem that my battery dropped to 0 when it was around 30%. You should try to reset the PMU or just recalibrate the battery.

And the tibook doesn't get warm here. Actually pretty cool, but the fan turns on very frequently. And it's somehow noisy...

search for this, there have been a lot of threads on this. In short:
calibration of battery: charge your book over the night and the next day log into single-user mode (start --> apple+s) leave it like this and wait till the battery turns off your book. Charge the battery again over the night and now check if you still have any battery issues. If it didn't work than
reset PMU:
am not really sure about the procedure, but you can find the PMU-button when you release the keyboard and check for a little button right next to your on/off button. Pressing this resets the PMU. There are more detailed descriptions in other threads. You should search...
Good luck!

I know you have a Powerbook. Just used book since it is even the same with the ibook. ;)
Before you do anything, make sure your laptop is off.
Ok, you have something like a "screw" in the middle of the keyboard on the top (F-keys) line. turn it till it looks unlocked. next to your esc and F12 keys there are some "switches". press them down and pull the keyboard gently up, since it is plugged from inside as well. just lean it on your mousepad and check for the PMU-button.
Btw, before you do this, make sure the calibration didn't change anything at yours.

HUH  I don't have a "screw" in the middle of the keyboard on the top (F-keys) line. but I have 2 screws one above the esc key and one above the eject key

bkaron,
Just consult you manual you got with your powerbook, or download a pdf version from apple support page. It will show you how to open your powerbook up.

No, Im still in school, ;) but just a few mins. ago My battery was at 15%. It was in red but the computer was not running on reserve battery power and all the sudden the screen went black :( I was only typing  I know it's not normal because my old iBook went to sleep at 0% - 5% depending on what I was doing.
