why doesn't apple fix that? (slow samba-sharing)

hi,

i've read many posts regarding the subject of slow samba-sharing, which can be solved very easily (a.o. by BroadbandOptimizer)..
but in my case the problem is still there in Tiger..

does this have to do with bad engineering by apple?
or does it have to do with the way samba is settup on our server?
and doesn't this problem occur in all situations?

..just wondering...

did you try increase the tcp-buffer on your linux system?
that's what makes it's blazing fast on osx..

so the default buffer sizes are the problem maybe,
and then maybe it is some mis-calculation in the samba settup

i don't know

If that is what is being optimized they probably have to keep the smaller MTU for compatibility with the whole host of networking devices out there. Some of them get quite cranky if they have to fragment packets in transmission. However, if you can get away with increasing your, MTU particularly with Gigabit Ethernet, it will make a big difference.

SMB sharing to another Mac, Windows client, something else?

I've found for my users on Windows, who connect over SMB to my Xserves, that mapping the network drive for the share they need speeds up their connections a great deal.

The SMB in Linux is slow also. I think it's just the way the SMB works.

I run linux and my smb is instantanous. I have a mixed environment with a windows domain server at work and the macs seem to join the slowest. I don't know why that is, but I have just learned to live with it. Although it is easier for me because I am a linux guy. My mac people probably would like it faster, but they are a little resistant to join the windows network anyway.
