Widgets don't work any more

After short no-prob phases, widgets don't work any more, neither Apple nor third party. Seems I'm not alone with this, but I haven't found a solution anywhere so far. When I try to install / activate one, the screen gets darker as usual, I hit the widget icon - there's the System alert sound - basta.

For the System installed Widgets, look in:

MacintoshHD ~> Library ~> Widgets

For 3rd Party Widgets, look in:

YourUserAccount ~> Library ~> Widgets

Do all your widgets seem to be installed to these default locations?
