Will a Macintosh 8500 w/G3 upgrade run OS X?
Will it be as fast as any other G3 of the same speed (I don't know how many MHz)?

How about a 6500/225 with a Sonnet Crescendo L2 G3 upgrade and the enabling software from Sonnet?

Kent!

Both those machines can be "made" to run OSX 10.1.x, though it will require some work using the various hacks around to support unsupported hardware. The machines will also run VERY slowly, and will likely not have enough ram to function properly.

As for running Jaguar (10.2), you will likely find that even if you can, so few of the features that make it worth running will work, that it is a waste of your time. Bear in mind that you will need to have a hard drive BIG enough for OSX (about 1.5Gb, just for the system and drefault apps).

The trick to get OSX to run ok on an oldr machine is to make sure you have sufficent amount of ram memory installed. I would say, that 384MB would be the minimum amount needed for satisfactory operation. The more the better. My G4 boots into over 300MB before I open any applications ( as indicated by Memory Usage Getter Utility). Run some leakly free apps for a long period of time and I have seen it eat up over a GB!!!!
